The one thing Hungarians don't do right !

Gender bias is undermining our social fabric and devalues all of us. It is not just a human rights issue; it is a tremendous waste of the world’s human potential. By denying women equal rights, we deny half the population a chance to live life at its fullest. Political, economic and social equality for women will benefit all the world’s citizens. Together we can eradicate prejudice and work for equal rights and respect for all. – UN Global Goals Website  Goal 5 is aimed at achieving equal rights for women and removing any sort of biases favouring men from the society. Recognising women as equals and not recognising men as superiors is something the world has come a long way ahead with, but still have a lot of miles to cover.  “Hungary ranks worst in the European Union along with Greece and Slovakia in the field of gender equality, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality’s 2017 Gender Equality Index, reports Magyar Nemzet. The report inspected conditions for women in the 28 Member States of the European Union based on their participation in political, economic and social decision-making between 2005 and 2015.” – A recent article on The Budapest Beacon To eradicate these biases, the UN came up with 9 targets under Goal 5 to aim to achieve by 2030 –
  1. End Discrimination against Women and Girls
  2. End all Violence Against and Exploitation of Women and Girls
  3. Eliminate Forced Marriages and Genital Mutilation
  4. Value Unpaid Care and Promote Shared Domestic Responsibilities
  5. Ensure Full Participation in Leadership and Decision Making
  6. Universal Access to Reproductive Health and Rights
  7. Equal Rights to Economic Resources, Property Ownership and Financial Services
  8. Promote Empowerment of Women through Technology
  9. Adopt and Strengthen Policies and Enforceable Legislation for Gender Equality
You can find out more about the targets on the UN Global Goals Site.  While NGOs and the government and huge organisations are doing their part in achieving gender equality, what can a normal average person do to contribute towards the cause ?
  • Women get paid 10 to 30% less than an average man. Voice your opinion for equal pay for women.
  • Be aware about stereotypes involving gender. Recognise them, make people aware and crush them.
  • If you see harassment of any form, stand up against it and take action in whichever way suits the situation best.
  • Find a female mentor, learn from them.
  • Share the domestic chores at home. Equality begins at home.
  • Donate towards a charity supporting gender equality.
  • Go with AIESEC for an exchange involving a project which works towards gender equality.
