Being Healthy : Easier than it seems

“Over the last 15 years, the number of childhood deaths has been cut in half. This proves that it is possible to win the fight against almost every disease. Still, we are spending an astonishing amount of money and resources on treating illnesses that are surprisingly easy to prevent. The new goal for worldwide Good Health promotes healthy lifestyles, preventive measures and modern, efficient healthcare for everyone.” – UN Global Goals Website

Sustainable Development Goal 3 is aimed at making sure that every human being has a healthy living and is rid of any diseases, and the financial, mental and physical burden that come with it. To achieve and promote good health and well being, the UN has 13 targets –
  1. Reduce Maternal Mortality
  2. End all Preventable Deaths under 5 years of age
  3. Fight Communicable Diseases
  4. Reduce Mortality from Non Communicable Diseases and promote Mental Health
  5. Prevent and Treat Substance Abuse
  6. Reduce Road Injuries and Death
  7. Universal Access to Sexual and Reproductive Care, Family Planning and Education
  8. Achieve Universal Health Coverage
  9. Reduce Illness and Death from Hazardous Chemicals and Pollution
  10. Implement the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
  11. Support Research, Development and Universal Access to Affordable Vaccines and Medicines
  12. Increase Health Financing and Support Health Workforce in Developing Countries
  13. Improve Early Warning Systems for Global Health Risks
Further information about the targets can be found on the UN Global Goals Website. With so many targets to achieve and the constant fear of getting sick, if you’re wondering what you could do to help, you’re at the right place –
  • Make sure your family is vaccinated. Preventing diseases helps public health.
  • Eat healthy and have a variety of dishes. Try to avoid sugar and processed food, and make sure you eat fruits and vegetables.
  • Donate blood and organise or be part of blood donation drives.
  • Exercise regularly so that you remain fit and prevent diseases. If you can’t hit the gym, even going for a walk helps.
  • Make sure you’re mentally healthy as well – talk to people, meditate and take professional help if required.
  • Donate towards any local charity that works towards eliminating diseases from its roots.
  • Go with AIESEC for an exchange and work in a project aimed at achieving good health and well being.
