Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an agenda from the UN to help solve global issues. Learn more about how you can help with it through an AIESEC volunteer exchange.
When we talk about changing the world and taking action to improve the global situation, it usually sounds like the kind of responsibility that should be taken by important people like politicians and other strong leaders. After all, we have so many issues to deal with that it would be hard to define where to start, right?
To make things easier, as the result of many debates and experiences, the United Nations alongside almost two hundred countries set goals and plans of action to be achieved every fifteen years. They’re known as Sustainable Development Goals or, simply, SDGs and they’re based on some key areas to the development of society like social, environment, economy and institutional.
But who will be responsible for this achievement? Governments might have their plans, but organizations like AIESEC believe in the power of local impact through volunteer work and international experience. And most of all, we believe in the power of young people to take action towards change.
As a partner of the United Nations through AIESEC volunteer exchange, you can pick an SDG of your taste and a project to work on it abroad during your vacation. During your exchange, you will make of your cause your daily activity, learn more about different realities and also about which moves you can keep doing towards change once you’re back home.
- How a volunteer exchange works?
By reaching a local AIESEC committee, our managers can help you find the best opportunity abroad that fits your traveling dreams and engage in activities on a local non-profit organization where you can help with their daily routine or develop new projects. You may enjoy your summer abroad among breathtaking landscapes in Italy, meanwhile, contribute to SDG 13 and help create workshops and seminars about climate changes for locals, help clean beaches and do recycling. But if you feel like heading for the East, Turkey is a great place to explore historical sites while you get in touch with refugee children in the country. You may guarantee quality education for them by teaching English and talking about human rights and how to act according to Sustainable Development Goals in one of our partners’ organizations, for example.
For AIESEC, leaders of the world aren’t just important men in suits, but it can be any of us who take a chance to learn and challenge ourselves in different environments. We believe that everyone can be a citizen of the world and feel responsible for global issues enough to take action.
